The Greater Canton Council of Teachers of Mathematics Math Tournament


The Stark County Math Tournament is held the first weekend in March, at Massillon Washington
High School. Approximately 750 students in Grades 5, 6, and 7 compete in the areas of mental
computation, geometry/measurement, algebra/data analysis/probability, number sense, team
problem solving, and advanced algebra (gr 7). Participating districts included Alliance City,
Canton City, Canton Local, Dalton Local, Fairless Local, Green Local (Summit County),
Jackson Local, Lake Local, Louisville City, Marlington Local, Minerva Local, Massillon City,
North Canton City, Northwest Local, Orrville City, Osnaburg Local, Perry Local, Plain Local,
Sandy Valley, St. Thomas.
Over 200 teachers, parents, and administrators who volunteer to monitor students
who were testing, scored answered sheets or help organize the tournament.
Students then received trophies and ribbons during the Awards Ceremony while family and
community members cheered and applauded their achievements.

Purposes of the GCCTM Math Tournament:


  1. Stimulate interest in mathematics.
  2. Recognize the achievements in mathematics of students.
  3. Give students the opportunity to gain recognition on a much broader basis.
  4. Provide mathematically gifted students with an opportunity to meet and come to know their counterparts in other schools.
  5. Have fun with Math.
